Why Study at China University of Geosciences (Beijing)

    Brief Introduction

China University of Geosciences (Beijing) (CUGB) is a multi-disciplinary national key university, and is one of China’s main centers for educating geological researchers and professionals of all sorts. CUGB evolved in an educational program that balances sciences, technology, arts, management, economics and law, one which emphasizes a connection between education and geology, natural resources, environment and geological engineering.

    1. History

China University of Geosciences (Beijing) traces its roots to Beijing College of Geology, founded in 1952 as a result of the merger of the geological departments from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Tianjin University, and Tangshan Railway College. Early success led to its being named one of the nation’s 64 “key colleges and universities.” In 1975, the school was obliged to move to a new campus in Wuhan. In 1978, the graduate faculties relocated in Beijing under the support of Mr. Deng Xiaoping, the leader of the People’s Republic of China. In 1987, the Ministry of Education approved a plan for China University of Geosciences to develop two tertiary institutions in Beijing and Wuhan respectively, both of which have independent legal personalities. China University of Geosciences in Beijing is among the first group of China’s higher level universities designated for the state key construction of the “211” project and is one of the first 33 universities in China approved to set up graduate schools as well. In February 2000, China University of Geosciences in Beijing (heretofore “CUGB”), previously managed by the Ministry of Land and Resources, was put under the management of the Ministry of Education. In March 2005, CUGB and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) became independent educational entities. Finally, in September 2006, CUGB was established as a joint responsibility of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Land and Resources.

    2. Discipline and programs

China University of Geosciences (Beijing) sticks to the route of combining science, arts, management together in school administration, and keep the integrative, crossing, advanced much-needed constructing policy, mainly featuring in geology, resources, environment and geology engineering, to seek for a coordinated and balanced manner in multi-disciplinary areas' development. According to the university's blueprint of the 211 Project constructing, it is decided to extend the current disciplinary areas, centralize the planning the disciplinary constructing, turn out the high-level talents and fully develop the key laboratories. Besides, it is also indicated to give the priority to the development of five disciplinary areas: Geodynamics and Global Events, Geometrical Science and New Stone Material, Mineral Resources Prospecting and Evaluating and Geoinformation, Geology Surveying Engineering and Geoengineering, Geoenvironment Protecting and Defending and Controlling Geocalamity. Currently, CUGB has 2 first class state key disciplines, 8 second class state key disciplines and 11 provincial key disciplines. CUGB has 17 colleges with a total of 47 undergraduate programs and 141 graduate programs for a master’s degree, 72 doctoral programs, and 9 post-doctoral research stations. At present there are more than 12,000 students enrolled with a teaching and research staff comprised of 1200.

    3. Academic facilities and Scientific research

China University of Geosciences (Beijing) has developed its comprehensive strength in teaching, scientific research, and cultivation in personnel, striving to improve the disciplinary areas constructing. Moreover, two national professional laboratories, which are the Development and Application of Mineral Stone Materials, Globe Scientific Drilling Laboratory, as well as one ministerial open laboratory of Lithosphere and Dynamics Laboratory. The famous research bases at CGUB including National Infrastructure of Mineral Rock and Fossil Resources for Science and Technology, Research Center for Tibetan Plateau Geology,  State Key Lab for Geological Processes and Mineral Resources, Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics,  Land Resources Information Development Research Laboratory, and Radiation and Environment Laboratory.

    4. China University of Geosciences –Beijing  Achievement

China University of Geosciences (Beijing), during the tenth five year plan period has undertaken more than 2800 research projects and total research funding reaches 550 million. Besides, our school has been awarded 3 the second prize of national nature science, 3 the first prize of state scientific and technological progress, 5 the second prize of state scientific and technological progress, 39 the prize of provincial scientific and technological progress, more than 10 national patents(authorized) and more than180 publications. In 2006, the dominant discipline innovation platform project "earth system processes and mineral resources" was approved by the education ministry and financial ministry.

    5. Communication and international cooperation

China University of Geosciences (Beijing) fully takes its advantage of locating in Beijing to participate in the academic exchanges through the nation as well as overseas actively. So far, it has established long-term and actual cooperative relations with over 150 universities and scientific research institutes in more than 20 countries. Besides, it also has regular communication with more than 30 international academic organizations and over 60 persons have participated and even assumed important roles in some organizations concerned. In recent years, the university has also enrolled foreign students, as well as admits and brings up specified postgraduates in the form of cooperating in running school.
